Why I started a Birthday Yard Greeting Service in Calgary

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

As my Dad's 50th birthday was approaching I found myself aimlessly searching the internet for "gift ideas for 50 year olds" or "what to get my Dad for his 50th birthday". The results were typical items he already has or silly things he just doesn't need. I wanted it to be something memorable and unique. I was truly stumped!

We had planned to celebrate his big birthday with a huge party. I remembered those "big heads" I have seen people holding up at the Calgary Flames games and came up with a genius idea - I would request his favorite song at the party (Whitesnake - Here I go Again), pass out a few of these big heads to his best friends to dance with. He would love it. I was so excited I could barely keep this secret to myself. He is the kind of guy that is naturally the life of the party so what's better than more than one of him at his own party?

And then....COVID happened. The party was cancelled and we were all disappointed. I still wanted to surprise him with the awesome big heads so my family and I danced outside his office window and had a 'covid' birthday celebration in the parking lot. He loved it and the heads were a big hit.

He told us that he had gotten a lawn greeting surprise on his lawn and wasn't sure who it was from! I drove by his house and thought it was a super cool joyous gesture, but then a few thoughts crossed my mind. Are these the only guys in Calgary doing this? Wouldn't it be sweet if the 'big head' was part of the sign? These look outdated to me.....is there anything more modern and up to date?

After researching, I learnt that there was barely any other options out there in Calgary and this particular company was ridiculously booked up due to the many COVID gathering restrictions!

I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit and am bit of an impulsive person so I immediately started designing, creating and making my idea come to life. I was extremely excited to start spreading joy to people on their birthdays with a giant message as big as their front yard. Nothing makes me happier than making other people happy and for as long as I can remember I have always enjoyed surprising people with little gifts or gestures.

Overwhelmed with a whole lot of letters and H stakes, I set a small goal for myself to get one paying random customer in my first month of launching.

We have been "officially open" for one month and I can proudly say that we have brought joy and happiness to over 25 different people celebrating birthdays and other events with custom lawn greetings.

Can't wait to see what the future has in store as we continue to try and grow Calgary Event Cards.
